The Refurbishment Process

Each piece has been carefully selected for its style and character. After being completely stripped and undergoing any necessary repairs, the refurbishment takes place. The exposed wood receives light restoration and new fire retardant fibre and filling materials are added. Any materials which are still safe and functional will be retained wherever possible. The piece is then reupholstered with carefully chosen quality fabric using traditional and modern upholstery methods. This completes a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece that will create a unique statement in your home.

The chair featured above is a wingback from the 1950s produced by the makers E. Gomme, the original company name before it became G Plan. It was taken back to the bare frame, refurbished and reupholstered in Antique Blue Velvet.

History

Susan, the owner of Take A Pew, has always had a keen interest in fabrics and sewing and worked for a bespoke soft furnishings retailer for many years. With this background, she took an interest in finding and refurbishing chairs that would otherwise be discarded. One of her first projects was found whilst salvaging materials to refurbish a former church her and her partner were converting into their family home.

Susan found what she was creating, originally to furnish her new home, was becoming very popular with friends and family who persuaded her to part with the chairs for their own homes.

Continuing to search for unusual and unloved chairs and working from a small spare room, Susan started to advertise them with various online sites. The chairs were extremely popular and the feedback so encouraging, she soon found she needed a more suitable workspace.

After moving to a new home in South Suffolk and converting an outbuilding into a workshop, Susan decided to honour the roots of her business and Take A Pew was born.
